RESEARCH BRIEF

Research Title
Utilization of Pistachio Peanut Shells As an Alternative Material for Making Construction Bricks

Summary :
This research is aimed to present alternative material solutions for making bricks that are environmentally friendly by using pistachio peanut shells as the basic material with the help of tempeh fungus as the binder, which the authors named as Organic Bricks. The authors used pistachio peanut shells because they are rigid and hard, so they will be strong enough to withstand loads, and also to convince people that waste can be turned into an useful item, so that our nature can be well preserved for our survival. The making process of Organic Bricks was quite easy because the steps were practical and simple : first, the pistachio peanut shells were washed until clean and crushed into small pieces, then mixed them with corn flour and tempeh fungus and put them into mold which has been given aluminum foil as a base, then the mold was stored in humid and dark place until it hardened enough; after that, Organic Bricks was removed from the mold and heated on the stove until the fungus died, then Organic Bricks was cooled and tested its durability. The result was the authors managed to find the perfect ratio between the pistachio peanut shells, tempeh fungus, corn flour, and water which is 1:1:0:1.
Introduction :
People nowadays are utilizing natural resources freely without considering the consequences. For example, people make bricks from clay which they get by eroding hills and mountains bit by bit that clearly destroys the nature, causing avalanche and reducing the natural beauty. In addition, burning bricks to harden clay also produces CO2 gas that can contaminate the air which is harmful to human health. Therefore, the authors present an innovative alternative material for making bricks by using pistachio peanut shells as the basic ingredients, which the authors named the product as Organic Bricks. The authors hoped to find the right ratio between Organic Bricks’ materials and know the durability of Organic Bricks so that people can know how to make Organic Bricks and be more inspired to care about the environment by being innovative when developing materials to improve human life.
Research Question :
How effective are pistachio peanut shells as an alternative material to make bricks by using the help of tempeh fungus?
Methods :
The materials for making Organic Bricks were pistachio peanut shells, tempeh fungus, corn flour, and water; while the tools were plastic container, aluminium foil, mortar and pestle, and stove. The procedure that the authors followed for making Organic Bricks was experimental procedure by experimenting to find the right ingredient composition in making Organic Bricks.
Result :
The result was Organic Bricks can be made from pistachio peanut shells by using the help of tempeh fungus with the perfect ratio between the pistachio peanut shells, tempeh fungus, corn flour, and water is 1:1:0:1.
